Celebrating Women's Day with my favourite women in Fashion!!!

The Magazine Maven: Anna Wintour

Anna Wintour wields considerable influence over American fashion. Runway shows don't start until she arrives. Designers succeed because she anoints them. Trends are created or crippled on her command. But Anna Wintour, editor in chief of Vogue, says she is determined to use her power for good, not evil. Despite her reputation for being icy and inscrutable, despite the severe perfection of her hairstyle and wardrobe, Wintour has taken it upon herself to act as something of a den mother to fledgling designers and worthy causes.

The Fashion Doctor: Dr. Precious Moloi-Motsepe

The brains behind the African Fashion International (AFI) group, Dr Moloi-Motsepe successfully converted a talent for medicine to a talent for nurturing young fashion innovators. Under the groups patronage, several South Africans designers have had a chance to showcase their works at Paris Fashion Week, and of course, Africa Fashion Week, which is an AFI event. As chairperson of AFI, she has given a very welcome platform to fashion designers from all over Africa. Noted for wanting to create employment and opportunities, this dynamo businesswoman is well on her way to seeing her dream of transforming the fashion retail industry become a reality.

The Designer we all love: Donna Karan

This New York native launched her own label to great acclaim, winning the hearts of working women with her streamlined, sexy suits. Donna Karan creates clothes for all women. I love her design style.

The Model turned Mogul: Kimora Lee Simmons Hounsou

The talented designer is credited with inspiring a new generation of consumers with her glamorous, sexy, over-the-top style which has catapulted her clothing label Baby Phat by Kimora Lee Simmons into an enormous success. Kimora's influence in the world of fashion is undeniable while her savvy as a businesswoman has made this former runway model a worldwide brand phenomenon. With an unrivaled universal appeal, Kimora is the only multi ethnic woman to have a successful fashion empire, with brands ranging from high-end merchandise like her KLS collection, to Shinto Clinical which are a range of luxe skincare products.

The woman who turned Plaid into Profits: Rose Marie Bravo

Since being named chief executive of British design house, Burberry, Rose Marie Bravo has convinced the style elite that the dormant, 148-year-old brand with its placid beige plaid, which had been spotted, if it was noticed at all, lining the raincoats on markdown racks not only is no longer a fashion anathema but is in fact a status symbol. Her feat has more than doubled the company's sales, turning it from a $470 million-a-year enterprise to a $1 billion behemoth.

Happy Women's Day to you all!

Gavin Rajah WoWs at Cape Town Fashion Week!!!

I saw my first Gavin Rajah collection in 2007 at Durban Fashion Week. It was my first year studying Fashion Design and I was in awe. It was my favourite collection of that fashion week.

I was unable to attend this fabulous showcase, but I did watch the live video stream on facebook. And Gavin Rajah simply did not disappoint with his Jaipur Collection Spring/Summer 2012. He is truly South Africa's King of Couture. His use of rich bead work, and beautifully cut pieces show how masterfully talented he is.

Please enjoy some of my favourite pieces from the show!

David Tlale at Joburg Fashion Week

Joburg Fashion Week ended with a bang as designer David Tlale closed the event on the Nelson Madela Bridge. David Tlale used the show to pay tribute to Mr Nelson Mandela. He ven went as far as using 92 models to mark the age of Madiba.

Tlales collection was inspired by Madiba, and each model represented a year in the life of the icon. They included the likes of Sonia and Matthew Booth, Gerry Rantseli-Elsdon, Michelle Botes, Jen Sue, Noni Gasa, Azania Ndoro, Tatum Keshwar and Roland Schoeman, who walked the 284m open air runway on 19 February as fashion week drew to a close.

In a media statement, the City of Johannesburg noted that, through this fashion week, it was able to showcase its flexibility in allowing multiple uses of its existing facilities and open spaces, promoting Joburg as a business and events destination and emphasising the creative minds in the broader arts industry. It also showed off Joburg as a brand to the world, thus contributing to the money that was gained through both local and international media coverage of the event. This event also had an economic spin off in that jobs, even temporary ones, were created to the benefit of the locals, said the City.

Joburg Fahsion Week 2011

Today marks Day 4 of Joburg Fashion Week, and for those of you who weren't fortunate enough to attend. Here are some pictures. Enjoy!

 Abigail Betz

I love this collection by Abigail Betz. Her designs are characterised by femininity and romance. This collection was showcased at The Johannesburg Art Gallery.

Errol Arendz
Errol Arendz has been a busy man, he not only stocks various boutiques and stores, but he also owns luxury fashion brands such as DuSud and EA Ready to Wear. Loving his collection at Joburg Fashion Week this year. His collection was showcased at The Bus Factory show venue.

Suzaan Heyns
A designer renowned for her avant-garde collections. Her highly structured garments are not for the faint-hearted, but you have got to love Suzaan Heyns for giving us something exciting and new to look at, and even wear.

Kluk CGDT
If there is one thing you can count on is the careful attention to detail on all clothing produced by this brand. I love the prints, and the Asian inspiration of the collection. Beautiful work.

I am especially excited to see what David Tlale has to offer, so watch this space.

Johannesburg Fashion Week 2011

It's official, and the date has been set.  Joburg Fashion Week will run from 15-19 February 2011.  African Fashion International Chairperson Dr. Precious Moloi-Motsepe announced that Joburg Fashion Week will take an entirely new direction for 2011.  Top industry player, Jan Malan of Umzingeli has been recruited  by AFI in order to create a platform that transcends the clich of a South African Fashion Week.

Venues for the various shows include The Bus Factory and The Rand Club. David Tlale will close the week on the Nelson Mandela Bridge. Other designers participating include Errol Arendz and Suzaan Heyns. Well, judging by the venues alone...Im sure it will be anything but cliche.

I am personally in love with the campaign pictures :)
